The Backyard Battle

bird drinking from a bird feederThe other afternoon my friend Francie and I were looking out on my backyard patio at a real dog fight – no, not between canines, but between hummingbirds. These two little guys were flitting and fighting over the hummingbird feeder. What was strange is, there are two feeders hanging from my eave, both of them full. There’s enough syrup to fatten 500 hummingbirds! But, no, these two kept battling… with neither enjoying the syrup. Francie finally said, “Can’t you guys just get along?!” It reminds me of the way we humans act at times. Even Christians! We’re so territorial. So competitive. But why? Romans chapter 8, 32 says, “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all-how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” Friend, there is an abundance of grace and opportunity available, so let’s quit protecting our turf: it’s time to get along! Oh, and this photo? When the fighting was over, we were able to capture the most feisty hummingbird on my iPhone (I guess all that scuffling made him thirsty :-).
