Joni SmilingI am amazed at how fast Joni and Friends’ Family Retreats are filling up – already there are waiting lists! (There’s still need for ‘volunteers,’ though, so pray about serving with us this summer :). It’s clear people with disabilities and their families are in huge need of soul-strengthening encouragement. And I'll confess, I'm in need of encouragement, too…

I’ve been dealing with a strange new level of pain the last four days, and Ken and I just can’t seem to ascertain what’s ‘wrong’ with my body. It’s been so frustrating, I’ve felt like trading my body in for a new one! But just last week I stumbled across 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body." Just when I feel like complaining, I'm reminded to honor God with my quadriplegia...

Messiah CollegeWe just returned home from an incredible trip that included the National Religious Broadcasters Convention in Nashville and Messiah College near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania – it was my first opportunity to travel in nearly a year (having been grounded during my battle against cancer last summer). At Messiah College, we helped focus attention on the new “Disability and Society” elective being offered for the fall 2011 semester (our Joni and Friends’Christian Institute on Disability [CID] is working hard to help other colleges develop disability ministry courses of study). I’m pictured here with Charlie, an engineering student at Messiah, who helped develop a proto-type of a “tricycle” wheelchair that is being used by disabled people in Mali, West Africa – I’m convinced these are the kinds of young Christian leaders who will one day carry the banner of the Gospel of Christ to disabled people around the world! … and we love signing them up as CID interns (think about joining our internship program this summer)! We also partnered with our Joni and Friends/Eastern Pennsylvania team in several fantastic ministry outreach events!

First, thanks so much for praying as I spoke this morning to more than 1,000 students at Messiah College, energizing them to share Christ's gospel with people with disabilities worldwide -- it was an AWESOME time and I really sensed your intercessions! Afterward, we met with our Joni and Friends Eastern Pennsylvania team and, yikes --Brian Funk, our Wheels for the World team leader for China says he urgentlyl needs 4 more Physical Therapists and 4 seating mechanics to join the Wheels to China outreach May 15-28. Spread the word! ...and get details at:
