Scott working at Joni and FriendsI couldn’t let October slip by without noting that it’s National Disability Employment Month. As you’d guess, many of our staff here at Joni and Friends are either disabled themselves or are family members of someone with a disability.

I love “talking shop” with other wheelchair users in the office, like Scott Bankhead. Of course, our limitations aren’t exactly the same—he has spina bifida—but it’s always great to talk over things like traveling with a wheelchair and accessible accommodations.

Best of all, we like to share how God meets our needs. Scott has a degree in Biblical Counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary and he puts both his training and his personal experience to good use in our Response Department.

Not long ago, we got to talking about the...

My nephew Kyle graduated from the University of Oregon, hoping to get a job with Nike – the international sport shoe company is located near the campus, and it seems every student somehow, someway would love to connect with the sports super-giant. Well, it happened recently to a...

My heart is always stunned and stirred when I hear people from different nations giving praise to God in their various languages. And if it thrills me here on earth, what will it be like in the throne room of God?! Revelation 7:9-10 says, “After this I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every...

So many powerful passions and social movements are pitting Americans against each other, creating a teetering divide that threatens to dismantle the very ideal of America. It's why the midterm elections occurring on November 6 are incredibly important and will determine the course of our nation for decades to come.

So will you join me in seeking God's heart, His wisdom and guidance as you make plans to vote? Bow before our merciful Lord and ask him to guide you. And don't quickly gloss over the choices on your ballot… do a little research, or seek insight from mature and informed Christians you respect. And please encourage your family members, friends and neighbors to vote, too.

Finally, whatever the outcome on November 6, let's strive to bind up our nations deep wounds, harboring no malice toward anyone… let's pray for unity, peace and liberty for our great country. Pray and vote!

The Holy Spirit tells us in Hebrews 3:13 to “Encourage one another daily,” and no wonder: life is that hard. It’s why every day I look for God's encouragement – He could prompt a friend to give me phone call, or a note or email, or have someone place a special book on my desk. Well, today, God's...

I returned last night from a ministry trip to North Carolina, and I'm still feeling refreshed from the crisp mountain air and the stunning autumn colors. During part of our time there, we stayed at The Cove near the foothills of the Smokey Mountains, and whenever I had a break, I wheeled along the...

For so many years, honestly, I never thought I’d live to see today, my 69th birthday. God has been so gloriously good in bringing me through the twists and turns of my life. And now that I'm here, I think back to the hundreds of believers who prayed for me when I was newly injured. Like me, they...

I thought I knew every song by Peter, Paul and Mary, my favorite folk singers back in the 60’s – I memorized the words to so many songs they made famous, and as a fan, I can still recall the lyrics and tunes. But not this one, “Danny’s Downs” which appeared on their Flowers and Stones album...

From Joni’s Heart—Thank You Volunteers!

“We have been sent to speak for Christ. It is as if God is calling to you through us. We speak for Christ when we beg you to be at peace with God!” - 2 Corinthians 5:20

Ken and I always love hobnobbing with volunteers at our Family Retreats (we call them short-term missionaries, or STMs). They sacrifice a lot to come and serve at Retreat as they take time away from their families, work or school. Excited and energized, they arrive with hearts pumped, sleeves rolled up, and ready to show Jesus’ love to weary moms, dads, disabled kids and the rest.

I watch with pride as a middle-aged volunteer spends the afternoon playing hopscotch with a lonely kid who has autism. Or a college-aged volunteer wipes drool off the smile of a teen with cerebral palsy. Or an...

Fresh off my last ministry trip and barely unpacked, it’s time to repack my bags again! This time I’m on my way to North Carolina. I can already feel the excitement in the air as I think of showing the remastered Joni movie movie at Central Church of God in Charlotte this coming Sunday. Of course...
