Volunteer at Family Retreat!

I know we’re just wrapping up November, and there’s lots of activity between now and next summer, but I couldn’t wait to share the 2019 Family Retreat Schedule. Although registration opens in January, I wanted you to take a look at the schedule now – download it and ask the Lord if He...

Cancer Surgery Update

Thank you for praying!I said it in an earlier post, but given the heartwarming response, I must say it again: thank you for your diligent prayers for us as we ‘get back in the ring’ with this cancer. The tumor was successfully removed on Monday, and Ken and I received the pathology report last night from my surgical oncologist. The tumor was a little smaller than a dime, the same cancer as the one in 2010, but faster growing – so I'm sure glad we caught it! All this means I am at a higher risk for re-occurrence, so we will face more aggressive testing in the future.

The surgery site will heal over Christmas, and then I will most likely start treatment in January. Probably it will involve radiation, but we don't know yet about chemotherapy. God is not to be resisted in this, and Ken and I are happy to do His bidding. It’s just a little rain in the sun-and-rain of God's sovereignty.

"For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him…" - 2 Chronicles 16:9. It all began when I received a letter from a quadriplegic in China. He had recently come to Christ and now saw his disabled friends as his mission field. He...

Isaiah 46:4

God bless you for your heartfelt prayers for me as I underwent surgery Monday afternoon to remove a small cancerous tumor on my chest wall. Since it was a clean removal, my oncological surgeon is very optimistic. All went well, it was a small incision, and I am home and resting, feeling very...

Duck in pondKnowing that I'm undergoing surgery for cancer tomorrow, my old high school friend Diana emailed me these reassuring words from Psalm 91:2, 4-5, "I will say of the Lord, 'He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'… He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day." If those words weren't reassuring enough, she attached a photo that touchingly illustrates the comfort and security of trusting in God during times like these. See that fluffy little one peeking up and looking totally content? That's how I feel, safe, protected and… content. And why not? When friends like you pray, God's got me covered!

Fall decorations and the word "Thankful"

When it comes to celebrating Thanksgiving today, I found the best of verses. Psalm 50:23 says, “The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me.” What a fitting Scripture as, once again, I prepare to undergo surgery in a few days to remove a cancerous tumor.

Many of you remember hearing about my battle against stage III breast cancer back in 2010. At that time, I underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy. Throughout the five years that followed, there was no additional signs of cancer, and Ken and I were overjoyed when my doctors declared me cancer free in 2015.

An Adoption Story

One of the most beautiful images of the position we have before God is that of adoption. Galatians 4:5 says, “God sent him [Jesus] to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children.” Perhaps that is why I am so moved by stories of adoption...

The International Disability Center after the fire

If you’ve been following the news, you’ve seen the terrifying images of the fast-moving fires here in California. Last Friday, in the darkness of night, Ken and I heard the news that we needed to grab the essentials from our house and flee. The Woolsey Fire spread so quickly, that many of my co-workers living throughout the area likewise evacuated. Even here in Agoura Hills, the fire licked at the property line of the International Disability Center before firefighters were able to stop those flames. Today is the first day we’ve been able to return to the office since the blaze started, and we’re all processing the events of the last week… first the shooting at Borderline Bar and Grill, just a few exits up the freeway… and then the fire. And in Northern California, the entire city of Paradise consumed.
