A Crown of Splendor

Today Ken and I came across Proverbs 16:31 in our Bible reading, “Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life.” After we closed our Bibles, we reminisced about our trip to Russia in 1991. I was in Moscow with Billy Graham and, during our stay, we befriended an elderly woman who swept the stone floors of our hotel lobby, using an old handmade straw broom!

Through an interpreter, we complimented her on doing an excellent job. Old and wrinkled, her cheeks were framed with a tightly knotted, colorful scarf. Her blue eyes and golden-toothed smile sparkled. She obviously drank in our appreciation! We met many Russian “babushkas” like her — praying grandmothers. Stalin had once said, “If we can get rid of these old women, we will have the youth in our grasp.” Stalin failed. And thank God for the praying grandmothers who served as a link, spanning a generation lost to atheism and connecting a new generation of young people to Jesus.

How grateful we can be to elderly saints who make prayer a life vocation. One day eternity shall reveal how far and wide Christ’s gospel was advanced through the faithful prayers of old and trustworthy Christians.

Is gray hair increasing in your life? Then work towards matching it with increasing righteousness! Let it be a reminder to intercede in prayer for the new, next generation.
