Don’t Take the Bait!

Fishing

Last year my husband Ken landed the largest trout he has ever caught. He lured the fish with a tiny number 16 pheasant-tail nymph fly. I’m not sure what that means, but the fact remains whatever bait he used, it worked to deceive this fish. As an expert fly fisherman, Ken loves meandering along a stream to find out which insects the fish are biting. Then, out his box of flies, he will choose one that most closely resembles that insect. He tells me it’s all about fooling the fish.

In a way, the devil is like the fly fisherman. He looks in his box of temptations, chooses one that he has seen us fall for in the past, and then presents it to us, quietly and stealthily. He’s hoping we will be gullible and not see through his scheme. But Matthew 6:13 warns us, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” Don’t let the enemy fool you…his bait promises satisfaction, but it’s a fake with a hidden destructive hook. Jesus is the One that’s real. So friend, watch and pray, and you will learn to recognize the devil’s sneaky tactics.
