God’s Intentions

When you read the story of Joseph in Genesis 37-50, you discover a lot of awful things happened to him: jealousy from his brothers led to his kidnapping and being sold as a slave. Even when it finally looked like Joseph’s life had ‘turned the page’ with his promotion to supervisor of Potiphar’s household, his boss’ wife tries to seduce him, plotting a sinister lie that lands Joseph in prison on false charges. Now, you’d think with all that, Joseph would have thrown in the spiritual towel. But no. Even after all the problems, Joseph tells his brothers:

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good so that others might be saved.” – Genesis 50:20

I love that word ‘intended.’ God is a God of intention — He has a goal, a plan. God was a giant step ahead of Joseph’s brothers, aborting their evil designs to suit His own intentions: that others might be saved. Friend, think of the disappointing things that have happened to you. Just what is God’s goal? How about that others might be brought to Jesus through your patient and trusting example? Today, I pray that you’ll see that every problem happens so that somehow, someway, others will be introduced to Christ through you. That’s God’s intention; now make it yours.
