God’s Strength in Our Weakness

For the first two years of her daughter’s life, Cynthia questioned why God would give her a child with severe physical disabilities. Seeing her daughter struggle and caring for her everyday needs was just so hard. But one day, in the midst of her frustration, Cynthia opened the Bible to John 9, where Jesus encountered a man who was blind from birth. When the disciples wondered why this man was born with a disability, Jesus emphatically stated, “This happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.” Those words flicked on a light for Cynthia; she realized that God had a divine purpose for her daughter: to showcase His mighty work!

And so, she went from being a grieving and distraught mother to a mother who could not wait to see what God had in store for her daughter’s life. And, oh, what glorious things the Lord did through her child! Even though Cynthia’s daughter passed away a few years ago, the lessons Cynthia gained in caring for her daughter have strengthened her faith in Christ. And today, she’s passing on that faith to her grandchildren. Just look at this sweet picture! After Cynthia shared my story with her grandkids, explaining how we can do all things through Jesus’ strength — even paint with our mouths — the kids decided to give it a try. I tell you, observing these children copy the way I write holding pencils in their mouths was, for me, a striking picture of empathy. It shows they want to understand, they want to experience the amazing things God does through our weakness. And sometimes, it’s that childlike attitude that you and I need to see God’s big picture.
