Chair Corps

Aileen Velthuis is an extraordinary Chair Corps volunteer from Northern Virginia who has been faithfully collecting wheelchairs for 10 years. In the last five years alone, Aileen and her husband, Phil, have collected more than 2,100 wheelchairs! In most regions, it takes a whole team to collect as many wheelchairs as Aileen. You may now be surprised to learn that Aileen just celebrated her 86th birthday.

Despite her age, her energy and passion to serve those affected by disability have been boundless. She has a reputation for being both strategic and resolute when approaching potential wheelchair donors. Armed with copies of the Joni and Friends Ministry Newsletter, Aileen always takes the time to explain the profound impact of each donated wheelchair.

In her determination to continue collecting wheelchairs, Aileen has now decided that it is time to take an apprentice under her wing. She will be praying and searching for exactly the right volunteer to train and raise up. Volunteers like Aileen are a rare gift and we are immensely blessed to serve the disabled alongside her!
