Sing With Your Mind

I love to sing. But often, if I know the hymn, I’ll sing by rote. I’ll just put myself on automatic and let the music carry me. Sometimes, I’ll get so caught up in the tune or the harmony, that I won’t even know what I’m singing. The other Sunday, while harmonizing on the words to a favorite hymn, I stopped and thought, Wait a minute… what am I saying? “Take my silver and my gold, not a mite would I withhold.” I mean, those are powerful words. It’s why we should think about what we’re singing. Just like First Corinthians chapter 14 says, “I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.” Often we fail to “sing with our minds,” that is to sing with a conscious and firm conviction of what we are saying. There are so many rich and powerful worship songs: So, next time you sing, sing what you mean … and mean what you sing.
