Walk of Respect

It seems that there are no easy decisions when it comes to end of life care. That’s why I wrote When Is It Right to Die? to help families navigate that difficult season of questions and concerns.

But the other day I came across a video that showcases a hospital’s choice to make one easy decision: showing respect for organ donors. St. Luke’s Meridian hospital in Boise, Idaho calls it a “walk of respect.” Whenever an organ donor has died and is wheeled on a gurney to the operating room, the entire staff is notified, and everyone who is able lines the hallway to show respect.

These healthcare workers know that, even in death, organ donors are helping others live – it’s a decision that deserves honor and respect. This “walk of respect” helps to reinforce the truth that each person (yes, even in death) deserves to be treated with dignity.

So, take a minute to view this touching tribute, and then, if you haven’t already, talk to your loved ones about your wishes for end of life care. And grab a copy of my book to help you think it through.
